Black & Green Interview with Rod Coronado

Black and Green Review is a cool site that (as the name indicates) deals with all things vegan, anarchist and feral. They go with the motto "wild existence - passionate resistance", so you know it's all good.

I discovered B&GR through a really interesting interview called "the Resilience of the Wild - talking and Stalking Wolves with rod Coronado". As everything that has to do with the activist legend, the interview definitely worth checking it out, and the site as a whole is another pillar in the ever-growing vegan activist movement.

Earth Crisis - "Destroy the Machines"

Hey hey.

Earth Crisis "Destroy the Machines" is considered by many to be the true vegan straight edge bible. Since its release in 1995 (that's 20 years), it has been inspiring hordes of vegan sxe hardcore kids worldwide, militant vegans, animal rights activists etc. And, well, one thing's for sure: "Destroy the Machines" and xECx will be here long after all your cool friends have broken edge and started eating meat or animal products.

Therefore I think it's elementary to put it up here for your listening pleasure. Enjoy.

Should I remind you that this blog is not intented to be another 'download' blog. Far from it. Downloads are meant to promote the bands and the labels that release the music that I consider important for the vegan straight edge movement.

Update & Seven Generations "To See The End"

Yo People! Just so you know, this blog ain't dead. I'm just leaving it here for people to find another resource on veganism and straight edge, while I am doing some other things. But of course my heart and mind are still dedicated to the fight for total liberation, and I will update and upload stuff whenever I can.

Here is a download for Sevem Generations' "To See The End", one of the most important Vegan SXE albums out there.

Carnivore Christian? - No, Thanks! (an Easter Special post)

I can openly say that I don't have a problem with faith. I believe it is totally normal and that each person is entitled to choose their faith according to what they want. I really don't care about the general atheist consensus in hardcore punk (and especially vegan straight edge) scenes. I believe in freedom of choice, and I know that faith/religion can indeed help some people lead better lives.

What I surely cannot accept is religion closing it eyes to the abuse of animals in such an organized and exploitative way. I just really hate how every religion has so much in common with stupid animal-eating customs and traditions, Easter being the biggest example of it all. How can something that is supposed to have a deep spiritual meaning of love and life, be so closely tied to murder of innocent animals?

My question may sound childish and self-evident, but if that is the case, why do we continue to consume animal meat and byproducts with such gladness? Face it, Christian (or even Buddhist/New Age religion follower): you are perpetuating a culture of death! Your faith is inhumane and filled with cruelty!

So please reconsider your actions and think about going vegan!!

Back on the Map!

When you think that we've gone away and that we aren't active anymore, that's just the right time to let you know that WE ARE here, stronger than ever in the vegan straight edge!! Just doing different things. NO selling out for us. Just fighting for the good cause, in case you forgot!

I am proud to see new animal rights movements here in Greece, and I am psyched to support and help them. Get the word out... veganism is here to STAY!

Sunday, 23 of March will bring the first thoroughly organized animal rights protest in Greece. Sure, there's been protests before (mainly anti-fur), but this seems to be bigger, due to the fact that veganism and AR are actually bigger in Greece now than ever before. Moreover, there's many different AR groups participating, so it won't be based on specific group's cliquey protest. Let's show them what's up!

One of the groups that has recently taken life in our country is the 269life department of Greece. I am not a member or anything, but I have met some members and they seem to be pretty devoted to the cause. I don't know why some people are talking about 269 being fascists or something, I don't get it. I don't want to say anything inaccurate or offensive, so correct me if I am wrong, but for now the 269 thing in Greece is totally unaffiliated with any form of fascism, elitism etc. So don't go condeming the whole movement already!

XVX What It Means to Me XVX -- A Vegan Straight Edge article by Walter Bond

This is a new article (April 2013), written in prison by Walter Bond and published on  his support website. If you don't know about this vegan straight edge animal rights activist, then you better check out: http://supportwalter.org

WALTER EDMUND BOND (37096013)

xVx What It Means To Me xVx
Drug and alcohol use is a waste of time, energy and life.  Drug and Alcohol Abuse leads to habituation and addiction which is the antithesis of liberation.  Most serious revolutionary groups and individuals of the past had provisions or stipulations against the consumption of intoxicants. Groups such as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the American Indian Movement are two shining examples of this.  Malcolm X once said “Every time you break the seal on a liquor bottle that’s a government seal you are breaking.”  How right he was.

Drugs and drink have been a tool of governments to decimate native cultures and racially eradicate them. In short it has been a very effective tool of genocide.  Knowingly and intentionally.  Hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine have been used to pacify nearly any movement the government views as subversive.  The large and worldwide production of the illegal drug trade works hand in glove with law enforcement, state and government authorities and police more than many people care to realize.

The legal industrial drug complex cranks drugs out as quickly as they can be dreamed up by mad scientists and greedy producers for everything from depression and anxiety to toe nail fungus and limp dick, with absolutely no way of knowing long term side effects to their consumers or their genetic effects on the next generation.  The industrial drug complex ensures that those that resist the addictions from illegal street drugs and the liquor bottle will eventually succumb to the doctor, bought and paid for by Astra Zeneca.

Drugs both legal and illegal fuel funding for millions of experiments done on Animals annually.  From addicting primates to methamphetamine, to inducing depression in beagles by way of torture and isolation.  All this solely to record the results of anti-depressants. This sinister and vicious industry of drug abuse funds the sinister and vicious business of vivisection.  Along with the drunk driver that mows down pedestrians while being asleep at the wheel. We also have the enormous amount of domestic violence due to raging alcoholism.  Child abuse, rape, molestation and murders which happen in staggering numbers and have direct correlations to addictions in the home. How nice to know that the government distills predatory violence with every bottle it produces.  And that women and children get to suffer heinously for the inebriation of drunken men.

Because of all this, and so much more I assert that Vegan Straight Edge as a lifestyle is essential for the individual, for our communities and the planet.  What many frame as abstinence is really the practice of self-liberation.  Freedom from addiction is literally freedom from one of the most vicious forms of slavery every seen on the face of Mother Earth!

Vegan Straight Edge, in my definition is: Veganism in our diet and consumption, coupled with the ethical belief that Animals exist for their own autonomy instead of human ends.  It is also a rejection of inebriation and all recreational drug use from our personal lives.  And lastly it is a stand against sexual exploitation in all its forms.  On top of this it is a commitment taken for life.

For the uninitiated that have not heard of Straight Edge, or Vegan Straight Edge a cursory glance at the internet on the subject will lead to videos of hyper masculine ‘dancing’, punk/metal music bands and a host of clothing, slogans and graphics.  While this is in part, ‘the scene’, and  the fashion trend that Vegan Edge has, and does grow through.  It’s the message and way of life that is the substance, not the music and fashion, don’t get it twisted.

With many Vegan Edgers ageing away from the scene it’s important to make this distinction, so that the vsXe kids out there can learn from our experience, instead of us trying to keep up with theirs.  And in the process turning into those creepy old people that don’t realize they look ridiculous in skinny jeans and anime hairdos.  But by no means do I discount the power that the vsXe scene has had, and still does.  For so many kids, myself included it showed us a way to empower ourselves and fight for what’s positive.  It took many of us out of the quagmire and filth of addiction right when we were on the verge of disaster.

Vegan Straight Edge, means everything to me.  It’s not the music, it’s not the tattoos and it’s not the camaraderie that makes Vegan Edge as close to me as my own heart beat.  All these things have their place but when the show is over, when the tattoos begin to fade and blend together and when friends come and go, it’s the way we live our lives that over time forms the people we are.  It’s the things we do and refuse to do, that define us.  Vegan Edge shrinks the gap between rhetoric and reality.  It’s not a school of thought and it’s not a belief (although both have evolved from it).  It’s an attempt to try and make this world a more peaceful and just place in an aggressive and forthright manner.  Starting with ourselves and reaching in ever wider circles to the world around us.  Building scenes and a community worldwide.  Screaming our manifestos as anthems to crowds of ourselves that scream them right back in our faces.  To the outside world it looks like a mosh pit or a hardcore punk concert, but for us it is not just a show, it’s an affirmation.

Unfortunately for many it’s an empty fad.  A phase that changes right along with musical tastes.  Realizing that a lifetime commitment to Veganism, drug free living and the refusal of sexual exploitation is at times difficult or cuts into ones hedonistic idea of fun, the substance soon gets discarded by the wayside.  For these people that talk of Vegan Edge as their salad days long after they have shit all over everything they once proclaimed to hold so true never were Straight Edge at all.  And I have no ear, or patience for tales of their Straight Edge days.  Anymore than the throngs of used to be Vegans who proclaim that they had to quit being Vegan because ‘It just wasn’t right for my body type’.

Interconnectedness is a two way street.  It’s nobodies right to poison their (our) children, community, environment or endeavors with the essence of oppression, the essence of greed and the essence of consumerism.  How odd it is as anarchists to be so vexatious against brand names, advertising and capitalist economy but then sit down with a fucking red white and blue beer can and get drunk on the same shit that whites use to kill the indigenous nations of the Earth!  How odd as a Vegan to care so deeply about the inherent rights of an ant or mosquito, but then smoke a joint that feeds a direct consumer link to cartel violence that enslaves whole cities and providences of Latinos for the drug lords reign!  Give me a fucking break!

In the final analysis, no one lifestyle, individual or tactic is all encompassing. We all take part daily in the atrocity of mass locust society.  But that is not an excuse to just throw our hands in the air and join in the spectacle of insanity that is technologically advanced civilization.  Perhaps we are not in a situation to save the world from capitalism, consumerism, Animal, Earth and Human exploitation in the present.  Perhaps we cannot usher in an age of Total Liberation tomorrow.  But we can save ourselves on a case to case basis, we can empower ourselves in thought word and deed.  No matter who we are, or where we are.  We can ‘scream for change’, ‘make a change’, and be a ‘force a change’.  In our lives and the lives of those around us.  By remaining Vegan For Life and living our One Life, Drug Free!

For Liberation,
Walter

Eden's Demise - XVX Metal from Russia

Vegan straight edge metal with brutal dual vocals (incl. one female singer) straight from Moscow! This is the kind of shit you want to check out.

 http://edensdemise.bandcamp.com/

This new band resembles a lot early Purified In Blood and that type of apocalyptic XVX metal, in my book that's a really good thing.

Enjoying the melodic death/metalcore riffs and double bass assault; nice touch with the brutal female vocals, too.

P.S. Also not to be confused with Greece's own Eden Demise (a brutal metal/hardcore band).

The Talon Conspiracy - Vegan/Animal Liberation zines from the past

OK!

As you know, every self-respecting vegan straightedge individual must take the time to educate themselves on veganism, be it becoming a pro on health and nutrition; learning and understanding the principles on ethics, economics and politics behind the vegan stand; or researching the history of the animal rights movement.

I am glad to find there's still people out there who put in the effort to bring back to the surface obscure vegan resources from the past. There is so much shit that is legendary but obscure and hard to find; the militant xveganx nerd in me is always on the hunt.

I recently discovered a haven for such things: The Talon Conspiracy is an awesome and very thorough online information hub on all things vegan and animal liberation. These guys have uploaded a bunch of super important oldschool vegan zines, which you can click and read online.

Check out and support the Talon Conspiracy!

Milk Effin Sucks!

I see it every day... people just don't want to accept the truth about milk & its products.

Well I guess we vegans will have to bombard pus drinkers with the facts on why it is bad for their health, if the cruelty imposed on animals doesn't convince them.

Wake the fuck up, drop that glass of milk pus and start indulging in the awesome dairy-free products which are growingly available in most food stores!

A Fuck You to the Armchair Revolutionary

I haven't posted here in a good while but man, I gotta get some things off my chest.

Another fashion statement for punks?
I am so sick and tired of all this talk about liberation from people who don't live it, let alone from some who are not even vegan! How can these people sit down and write all these long articles about 'total', humyn and animal liberation... and then still have fucking everything they eat with cheese and milk in it? This is truly pathetic.

What fucking good will another armchair revolutionary do to the vegan struggle? All this theoretical talk about anarchy and veganism, preaching to the converted just won't cut it anymore. It's useless. I am not saying I am fighting the oppressors in the trenches every fucking night so I keep my mouth shut and don't pretend to be some righteous PC warrior king. Moreoever, I know one thing: the world won't change with pamphlets and opinions on the struggle, it will change (if it ever will) by example. And in short, this is what we need: more examples of solid vegan lifestyles!

Some people just don't get it. They don't care about the truth, they just wanna live the dream, and in their minds they are some great anarchist activists, fighting the system from their bedroom behind their computer. Oh how I wish for their fantasy to be crushed... and it surely will be!

p.s. And don't get me wrong. Education is awesome, but there are many sources on veganism and liberation as it is. What we actually need is action and lives changed!!!

Strife - Rebirth!

The vegan straight edge is all about consistence; without it, we show that our stand was not solid and we also give the whole movement a bad name through being a bad example ourselves. However, the vegan straight edge is also about tolerance. Who can say how long each of us will last despite our for life pledges? Who are we to criticize the people and the bands who laid down the foundations of the vegan straight edge movement back in the day?

In my opinion, the return of Strife is one of the best things that happened to hardcore in 2012 (along with the new Bad Brains album!). It is so great to see this legend come back to life with an incredible sound. Undoubtedly, Strife was one of the three most influential vegan straight edge bands of the whole 90s hardcore scene, the other two being Earth Crisis and Snapcase. It really doesn't matter to me if Strife isn't vegan and/or straight edge anymore, because I still get that burning feeling of urgency the early records gave off; the songs in Witness a Rebirth comes straight from the heart with a message of clear-minded thinking. It is just a good hardcore record that gives us lessons in integrity, self-reliance, strength and personal reflection.

Personally, I find that Witness a Rebirth does in fact make me even more proud to be vegan & straight edge, because it expresses a positive mindset that is open to interpretation. 2013's Strife essentially stands for those same values the vegan straight edge represents. In turn, tthis reminds me that hardcore is one big family and that the bands we listen to are like our best friends, making our life just a little bit better with their message and music.

On the Stage (7 Generations)

One thing I've always loved about hardcore is the on stage speeches inbetween songs. Improbable as it seems, hardcore kids do get educated at hardcore shows -- something that can be truly important when the person onstage has something positive and isnpirational to give. Perhaps that's also what the scene is lacking our days, people with something to say and the guts to actually say it. Therefore kids should pay attention when bands are speaking their hearts out because remember, hardcore is not just about the music and the moshing. It's so much more.

This song be 7 Generations is a good example of what I just talked about. Hardcore is a way to live, a way to learn, a way to change yourself and your surroudings!

xOur Warx: If You're Not Now... (2000)

Our War was a US band that was all about the straight edge, music-wise and of course lyric-wise. I can't verify this but I've read that the band contained members from 90s vegan sxe pioneers Chokehold (!) and bad ass fastcore giants Haymaker.

I've seen this record circulating on download blogs and judging from the cover I always thought it would be some kind of boring beatdown band. Boy was I wrong. In fact, this is probably my favorite type of hardcore: fast, brutal, catchy and obnoxious. Enjoy the full stream of this 2000 album entitled If You're Not Now... You're Dead.

New Blog!

Well... those who know me definitely know I have somewhat of an obsession with doing new stuff and starting new blogs/zines etc.

So, I have a new blog, kind of an idea that I wanted to do for a long time. It is a blog that deals with spirituality and hardcore. Yes, I know it sounds absurd. Even though I am not religious in the classic sense, spirit-filled hardcore has always been a positive influence for me and now it is time to pay some respect to it. I guess it's still a vegan straight edge blog, but in a different way. Some of you will simply hate it, but I like to take the risk regardless.

And a personal truth: I spend 11 hours of my day working in a vegan shop, so I guess sometimes I am too burned out to do a strictly vegan edge blog. I mean -- veganism is my life, but I have others things I love too. Who knows? Maybe it is time to do something new and try different things, expand. I'm not saying this blog is finished. We'll see.

Stronger than Ever (& Path of Resistance "Against the Gale")

Wow... it often seems so easy to get caught up in the daily struggle and forget about why you're doing what you're doing. When you do something for too long, you can end up forgeting why you're doing it. For me also it's like, sometimes I almost forget I am vegan and straight edge and kind of take for granted what this commitment represents. Every day is full of work, spinning the wheel like everyone else and of course dealing with people who are neither vegan or (definitely not) straight edge. Surrounded by broken heroes and apathetic machines, yes, sometimes it is easy to forget who you are.

However I've found since long ago that the motivation to stay passionately drug free and vegan does come and go in waves. It's just how it goes. I mean, being vegan sxe is just who I am now, but it is always good be really psyched about the whole vegan sxe ideal. And the best thing is when, at some point in your everyday routine, you remember once again why you're here. And what a great thing the vegan straight edge is. I love the feeling you suddenly get when a hardcore record brings back all the motivation of  why you made your choices. When this happens, a record is not just a record anymore, but a whole idea, a whole way of life, it brings back all the reasons why you're here and why you're making the commitment.

I am too old to be excited all the time, I guess. I've seen to many people turn their backs not only to veganism and/or straight edge but also hardcore (which is supposed to be the very essence). And that's not cool. But I feel so lucky that I can touch base every now and then, and have all those records bring that awesome feeI guess the songs say it better than I do.That's what actually picks me up and throws me back in the fight again.
 ---------------------
For sure, the songs say it better than I do. Hardcore can give you the strength toovercome all the troubles and reinstate you faith! And those lyrics just sup up the way that I feel...

AGAINST THE GALE Lyrics: These are the hours where our souls are tested Their resolve weakens While the storm strengthens I won't share in their dismal fate As time passes the pressure intensifies to just give in To be swept over and down to never return again Tattered and torn Taken by the wind Frantic hands grasp to pull me under with them The waves, the rocks, the tower on the shore The light shines through the dark Steer by it and be sure against the gale Hold fast Committed for life With my skeleton crew We will last even through this night Hold fast the faithful.

(Don't) Have a Hotdog!

So many people think they can prove their manliness or look real cool by eating some ridiculous amount of hotdogs at a barbeque and generally impress others by eating all sorts of crappy meat. I just don't get it. Why is it considered cool to act ignorant and eat a lot of meat? Does it really make you a man? Especially when those people have learned about the health hazards of meat eating, the benefits of veganism for health, animals, the environment etc etc.

Like every other vegan, I have had my share of comments and pranks about being vegan. I have heard everything, even worse: I have heard the same jokes many times. But maybe it's a good idea to remind that the joke just might be on them. It's time to fight back with the facts, and let them know that the era of ignorance is starting to wither and become old!

Confessions...

So what will you do? Will you do what you can to make this world a better & more sustainable place? Help support life on this planet? The new ethic is found in the lives of people who are actually devoting their lives working for this cause. They are out there, while we sit.

Random XVX negativity (& a Drop Dead song)

I haven't posted much here during August's second half. But one thing is for sure, in my life I'm just as adamant in my convictions and dedicated to the vegan straight edge as I have ever been. It's just that the enthusiasm about writing/blogging comes and goes in circles. It just goes like that.

Sometimes I think that doing blogs and zines is nothing but a mere cultural expression in regard to the vegan xxx cause. I mean, it hardly changes anything, it hardly impresses anyone in this forsaken, cold world. The people who are into it just want to see tattoos and Iphone fucking pix taken in the mirror. XVX patches, "Liberate" patches and all that crap. Yes, I'm kind of let down with the kind of people I've met in this scene. That's why sometimes I tend to say "fuck it" and just want to hide underground. Just keep myself pure, locked in the fight for what's right. And that, I have already.

And now take 42  seconds of crusty powerviolence, you fucks!

Girrrls in Subculture: new feminist hardcore zine!

Grrrls in Subculture is a nice and minimalist-looking feminist hardcore blog & zine that has been going since May 2012. The blog (check it here) displays a nice selection of grrrl articles as well as interviews with girls who are active in the hardcore scene (mostly by playing in bands).

I already saw some pretty interesting interviews with Wolf X Down and Whichcult while I found the Beyond Pink interview a little 'whatever'. I am also looking forward to read the articles, and I hope to be challenged or provoked in some way. Grrrrl zines are important for girls as much as they are for boys, really. Zines like this can help us deprogram the preconceived notions that we have about gender issues and about that thing called "equality" (does it exist?).
