I am super glad to let you know that me and a few friends have come together to make a new, purely straight edge site! This new effort has the intention to reinforce straight edge as a positive alternative lifestyle in our country (Greece), and of course anywhere else people want to hear us out.
Our "crew" (basically a bunch of friends and bandmates) decided that straight edge is severly under-represented in Greece, and we chose to combine our efforts in order to give the movement an extra boost here. We upload songs, images, news, flyers, show posters and all kinds of other media that are edge-related. So... check the site out, follow, suggest, share, do-whatever-it-is on your social media and support our cause to keep straight edge... clean!
In a world where drinking, smoking and acting like wannabe rockstars is the norm, straight edge IS the rebellion. Some 31 years after its inception, you still can't beat this way of life... You still hate it and you can't really tell why. Maybe because you can't be it. It's all about the black sheep who gets ahead. We kept the good and we threw away the bad. Straight edge is rock n roll.
Κάποια πράγματα παραμένουν κλασικά... Ονόματα όπως οι Minor Threat και οι Youth of Today πάντα θα παραμείνουν οι θρύλοι του straight edge. Μήπως όμως ανήκουν στο παρελθόν;
Ακόμα και αν οι πρωτοπόροι του straight edge έχουν προχωρήσει και αποσυνδέσει τον εαυτό τους από αυτό, πρέπει να αποδεχτούμε ότι ένα κινήμα που μεγαλώνει κάποια στιγμή αναπόφευκτα θα ξεφύγει από τα χέρια και την επιρροή αυτών που το δημιούργησαν.
Πολύς κόσμος χρησιμοποιεί ως παράδειγμα δηλώσεις του Ian MacKaye (του ατόμου που συνέθεσε τον όρο straight edge) για να ισχυριστεί ότι το straight edge δεν θα έπρεπε να υφίσταται σαν κίνημα, επειδή αυτός έχει πει ότι ήταν μια προσωπική επιλογή που δεν πίστευε ότι θα γίνει (και δεν ήθελε να γίνει) αυτό το τεράστιο κίνημα.
Ε λοιπόν οι καταστάσεις έχουν αλλάξει και δεν είμαστε πια στο 1981. Δεν μπορούμε να κρίνουμε το straight edge με γνώμονα παλιές δηλώσεις, πεποιθήσεις και στάνταρντ. Δεν είναι καν σωστό να χρησιμοποιούμε τα λόγια ατόμων με "θέση ισχύος" (π.χ. γνωστές προσωπικότητες) για να αποδείξουμε αυτό που θέλουμε εμείς. Δεν ξέρουμε ούτε το πώς ούτε το γιατί είπαν αυτά που είπαν... το μόνο που ξέρουμε είναι να παπαγαλίζουμε δηλώσεις, αφού μας αρέσει να μιλάμε και να επιχειρηματολογούμε (πολλές φορές άσκοπα).
Δεν υπάρχει πραγματικά λόγος να είσαι ή να μην είσαι straight edge, vegan ή οτιδήποτε άλλο σε αυτή τη ζωή. Εν τέλει, ΟΛΑ είναι προσωπικές επιλογές. 'Αντε να πει κανείς στους Earth Crisis (και αμέτρητες άλλες μπάντες και άτομα) που έχουν αφιερώσει όλο τους το έργο στο straight edge και/ή το βιγκανισμό, ότι δεν υπάρχει λόγος να κάνουν αυτό που κάνουν. Τι σημασία έχει αυτή η γνώμη;
Αυτό που θέλω να εκφράσω με αυτό το άρθρο είναι πως αν και σίγουρα πρέπει να έχουμε σεβασμό στις ρίζες από τις οποίες όλα ξεκίνησαν, πρέπει επίσης να κρατάμε τα θετικά και με κατανόηση να προχωράμε μπροστά. Να έχουμε την όρεξη και τη δύναμη να μεταφέρουμε εμείς το βάρος και να αφήσουμε το χθες, στο χθες.
Being away on holidays for a few days gave me a chance to reflect on what it is to be straight edge in this world. I was away from my friends who are edge and couldn't spend much time online checking out cool straight edge bands or listen to much straight edge music.
The reality of the matter is that this world is definitely NOT straight edge.. not even straight edge-friendly. We live in a world where the norm is to drink and/or smoke and that's that. And even though I know the aforementioned fact well enough, I always feel it more when I am out of context and away from my familiar surroundings.
Does this mean that I get jaded on being straight edge? Hell no!
What I realize is that people who are vegan and especially straight edge are really few and far between. I am not talking about the straight edge kid who does it for fashion or whatever, but about the true warriors who dedicate their life pledging to and promoting a clean lifestyle. Those who are really living it and are supporting it with passion.
I guess this is the reason why those "few and far between" people tend to create tight friendships no matter the distance or their background. If there is some unspoken brotherhood status to being edge, I am happy to claim it. STRAIGHT EDGE!
* by the way of the post's title I remembered (and listened to a few times) SHUTDOWN's awesome, super old school Few and Far Between album. Straight from the late 90s, real hardcore the way it should be played. If you don't have this classic and consider yourself a hardcore fan, do something to find this album!
Last night we played live our new, *straight edge* song for the first time, and got a pretty good response from the crowd (250-300 drinkers and 3 edge kids). We also had an anti-drugs leaflet and A. spoke about it briefly before we played the song. He just said a few words about the fact that there are people who actually DON'T drink. Do kids even care about that stuff any more? Or do we just piss them off with our live clean stance? What we discussed with A. after the show is that even if most kids don't dig straight edge at all (for whatever reason), at least there is a presence that represents this lifestyle, that shows that kids like us are here and we are doing our thing. We're letting them know it's here. We gotta be bold, and grab the chance to tell people! STRAIGHT EDGE!
Many times I wonder what straight edge really means to me. It's not like I've been edge for such a crazy long time (compared to others) or that I haven't fallen off the edge in the past. It's nothing to be proud of but I'm human and have gone through many difficult phases like everyone else. Nevertheless, I've been edge long enough to talk about the differences it has made in my life. I try to stay connected with what made want to lead a clean life in the first place and try to maintain that without geting too carried away with what it will mean in the long run, or what it means for others, as long as I am having fun staying sober. Every day I deal with society's self destructive ways and peoples' weak, self-denying, addicitve behaviors and in a sense, it s what gives me the strength to remain clean. Maybe in that, I see a side of myself that I don't want to see no more. Every day I deal with the "why don't you drink in moderation like everyone else" and the "a beer or two can't hurt you". But then again I realize how the stances we take are usually symbolic; they stand for something that is higher than us and this is what words like 'principles' and 'values' represent. I guess I want to live in a way that is strong and positive and straightforward, and I want to go it all the way, not half-assed. This is just one of the many reasons I don't drink AT ALL and I remain straight edge each consecutive moment.
And this is my testimony. I'm gonna keep it clean and I am going to keep it loud and shout it out!
...and nothing can beat the energy and positivity that comes out of it!! So let's goooooo! Hardcore shows have never been so good. It's a wonderful time to be sober!
Like we've said before, straight edge needs to maintain (or actually regain) its rad, extreme, call-it-whatever-you-want value and not turn into a safe commodity for college kids and academic nerds. It needs to be removed from the hands of the so called intellectual back into the lives of everyday people who need it. Let's not forget straight edge is something which arose from punk and punk is about attitude, it is about being obnoxious and loud sometimes! Punk and hardcore needs straight edge now more than ever, or maybe the opposite: straight edge needs punk now more than ever!

'Οπως επανειλημμένα έχουμε πει, το straight edge πρέπει να διατηρήσει (ή μάλλον να ανακτήσει) την τρελή, ακραία, ή όπως αλλιώς θέλει κανείς να την πει αξία του και να μη γίνει άλλο ένα ασφαλές προϊόν στα χέρια των πανεπιστημιόπαιδων και των ακαδημαϊκών φλώρων. Πρέπει να μετακινηθεί από την ιδιοκτησία των δήθεν διανοούμενων και να μπει στις ζωές των καθημερινών ανθρώπων που το χρειάζονται. Ας μην ξεχνάμε επίσης πως το straight edge είναι κάτι το οποίο δημιουργήθηκε μέσα από το punk, και το punk είναι ένας τρόπος ζωής εκκεντρικός και φασαριόζικος κατά ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό! Το punk και το hardcore χρειάζονται το straight edge τώρα περισσότερο από ποτέ, ή μάλλον το αντίθετο: το straight edge χρειάζεται το punk περισσότερο από ποτέ!
The last few years there has been a surge of clothing lines entering hardcore, and that happens to a great extent with straight edge as well. From a DIY point of view, we have to ask whether SXE clothes are worth our hard earned money and if there is any reason to wear them at all. I am not talking about the kid who goes and makes a DRUG FREE shirt for him or herself and a few friends; the latter is just perfect, I am talking about all these 'straight edge ambassadors' who want to capitalize on this anti-materialist philosophy, especially when those t shirts and hoodies are so damn expensive. I really find no reason for buying them at all. Pushing positive messages through our clothing (i.e. with a VEGAN shirt or whatever) is totally OK, but it's not such a great deal when it comes to activism. I think that wearing some type of VSXE gear helps us more in a personal way, in order to stay strong - and that's totally acceptable. But when it becomes another badge of pride that we have to pay big bucks for it, it just loses its meaning.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια υπάρχει ένα δυνατό κύμα εταιρειών ρούχων που μπαίνουν δυναμικά στο hardcore, κάτι που συμβαίνει κατά ένα μεγάλο βαθμό και με το straight edge. Από την πλευρά της DIY σκέψης, πρέπει να αναρωτηθούμε αν τα ρούχα που διαφημίζουν το straight edge αξίζουν πραγματικά τα λεφτά μας και αν υπάρχει λόγος να τα φοράμε καν. Φυσικά δεν μιλάω για κάποιο παιδί που πάει και τυπώνει μια δική του/της μπλούζα που λέει DRUG FREE ή κάτι παρόμοιο. Αυτό είναι τέλειο. Μιλάω για όλους αυτούς τους 'πρέσβεις του straight edge' (προς το παρόν αυτοί υπάρχουν μόνο στο εξωτερικό) που θέλουν να βγάλουν χρήματα από αυτή την ουσιαστικά αντι-υλιστική φιλοσοφία, ειδικά όταν τα ρούχα που πουλάνε είναι πανάκριβα. Το να προωθείς θετικά μηνύματα μέσω της ένδυσής σου (π.χ. ένα μπλουζάκι που λέει VEGAN) είναι καλό, αλλά εν τέλει δεν είναι καν τόσο σημαντικό σαν ακτιβισμός, εκτός αν είσαι 'κάποιος'. Νομίζω πως το να φοράμε ρούχα που έχουν να κάνουν με το vegan straight edge μας βοηθάει περισσότερο σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, ώστε να παραμείνουμε δυνατοί, κι αυτό είναι απολύτως λογικό. Αλλά όταν γίνεται ένα έμβλημα τιμής για το οποίο πρέπει να τα σκάσουμε κανονικά, τότε χάνει το νόημά του.
Just to make things clear.... When we say it's a war we don't mean war as in violence, so all you PC types please don't get so offended. Then again, we're not joking about the "war" part either. It is a war, but the war we are fighting is a war on consciousness (the consciousness of apathy, selfishness and ignorance). If our thinking changes then there will no more be a need for extreme activism or any activism at all. We will have stopped the injustice and the self destruction, our goals met. But until then, we will do what we can with what we've got. And we will make war.

Για να μην παρεξηγούμαστε... ότι λέμε ότι "κάνουμε πόλεμο" δεν το εννοούμε κυριολεκτικά, οπότε όλοι οι politically correct (γνωστοί και ως PC) μην τρελαίνεστε. Ούτε πλάκα κάνουμε όμως. Πόλεμο κάνουμε, αλλά πόλεμο συνείδησης. Αν αλλάξει η στάση μας (η απάθεια, ο εγωκεντρισμός, η άγνοια κλπ κλπ) τότε δεν θα υπάρχει ανάγκη για κάποιο άλλο είδος ακραίου ή μη ακτιβισμού. Δεν θα υπάρχει αδικία ούτε αυτοκαταστροφή και εμείς θα έχουμε πετύχει το στόχο μας. Μέχρι τότε θα κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε με ό,τι μέσο έχουμε, και σίγουρα θα σας κάνουμε πόλεμο.
Straight edge will forever be linked with intensity, energy and straightforward-ness. It is not about over polished messages and slick ways of expressing oneslef. Or even the cleanest sound. Τhe original straight edge lives and breathes as long the "REAL" factor is there in the process of expressing a clear mind and a positive philospohy. And the possibilities of this process are endless...

Το straight edge θα είναι για πάντα συνδεδεμένο με την ένταση, την ενέργεια και την αμεσότητα. Δεν έχει να κάνει με καλογυαλισμένα μηνύματα και "έξυπνους" τρόπους έκφρασης του εαυτού μας. Δεν έχει καν να κάνει με τον ήχο. Το πραγματικό straight edge ζει εκεί που υπάρχει ο παράγοντας "ΑΛΗΘΕΙΑ", και ζει μέσα στη διαδικασία της έκφρασης ενός καθαρού μυαλού και ενός θετικού τρόπου σκέψης. Και οι πιθανότητες αυτής της έκφρασης είναι ατελείωτες...

'Cats and Dogs' is the last song from Gorilla Biscuits' classic 1989 album 'Start Today'. This song is a hymn for animal rights and vegetarianism. Along with Youth of Today's song 'No More', they are some of the first and most inspirational songs which brought veg(etari)anism in hardcore music.
Pets should not be the only animals who are treated fairly by us humans. Read the lyrics and listen to the song and you'll understand why.
